This is my simplified version of a recipe from Saveur, which mixes booze with the "Master Cleanse" ingredients. The bourbon and cayenne give this drink a nice warming feeling, the lemon provides brightness, and the maple makes it perfect for fall and winter.
2 oz bourbon
1 Tbsp maple syrup (try to get medium maple syrup)
0.5 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
2 Tbsp granulated brown sugar (granulated is the non-sticky kind)
0.5 Tbsp cayenne pepper
Top with seltzer (optional)
- Put the cayenne pepper and sugar on a plate and mix well.
- Wet the rim of your cocktail glass and flip it upside down into the mixture to create a thin layer of coating on the rim, as you would for the salt on a margarita.
- Add ice to the glass and pour the first three ingredients into a cocktail shaker, add ice, and shake.
- Strain the liquid into the glass, and if desired, top it off with soda water and give it a little stir.
